Are brakes different on diesel trucks?

Yes — since diesel trucks are typically used to haul big loads, regular brakes, rotors, and calipers just don't provide enough stopping power.

When should I replace my brake pads?

Depending on your make and model, you'll notice some of the following when it's time to bring your truck in for brake service:

Warning light comes on for low brake pads: This will be a dashboard indicator light that signals it’s time to replace your brake pads.
The Squeal: There's a piece of metal built into your brake pads that, when the pads are worn down enough, starts rubbing against the rotor when you brake. It's super annoying (on purpose) so that you'll be forced to bring in your truck for service.
Grinding noise: If you hear grinding, you've waited too long. Your pads are gone and are now rubbing against the rotor. Bring it in for service right away or you could be at risk of an accident.
Your brake pads actually look think: If you can get in behind your tire to take a look, you can see if there's barely any pad left.

I think I have a brake problem. Can I drive to the shop?

No — dude. Obviously not. If your brakes are not operating properly, bite the bullet and get a tow. It's not worth putting your life and others live's at risk.

That said, if your brakes are just getting routine maintenance, by all means drive to the shop. If the squealer is going, it should be safe to drive. Just make sure you take care of it sooner rather than later.

How many KMs are diesel truck brake pads good for?

Obviously it's going to depend on how your drive but diesel truck brake pads typically last between 40,000km and 100,000km.
